Ukrainian cinema can truly be considered a phenomenon - not so much in terms of level, but in terms of the possibility of an experiment that should create an original image of national cinema. So director Sasha Lidagovsky, in his youth drama "Squat32", decided to explore the underground crowd of young people who equip abandoned buildings for life, and more simply, they are engaged in squatting. The creators of the tape also focused on the social component - releasing a subtitled version - in cooperation with the organization "Feel", whose goal is the social adaptation of people with hearing impairment.
In the center of the plot is a young girl, Lisa, who works at a boring job, photographing clients for a foreign passport. The work is monotonous, "conveyor belt", associated with dealing with irritated customers... And then one day fate brings her together with the inhabitants of an abandoned building - Squat 32 - who are fighting with a real estate developer and the leader of the squatters, Sasha. The old building becomes a source of inspiration for the girl, an opportunity to find her way in life - the path of creativity and development.
In general, "Squat32" is a youth movie, with an emphasis on youthful maximalism. There are many social issues in the picture, such as the demolition and deliberate terror of developers against old buildings, the limited opportunity for self-realization of young people, as well as (only) indirectly the problems of war: one of the heroines is a girl from a family of displaced people.... And at the same time, the authors did not have a goal to make a drama - the authors solve many difficult questions simply - so an unknown passport officer "suddenly" becomes a recognized guru of fashion photography. The script looks well-fitting, but linear; at the same time, it unfolds rather slowly, which is atypical for youth cinema. The spirit of the artists' complex environment, drawings and photographs, and the emphasis on sound accompaniment are well illuminated.
