A petition to have the restrictions placed upon Mordechai Vanunu lifted

A note from Ernest Rodker,
coordinator of the International Campaign

The international Campaign to Free Vanunu is inviting you and other prominent people throughout the world to sign the enclosed petition in support of Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli nuclear whistleblower who was released on April 21, 2004 after almost 18 years in Ashkelon Prison.

Mordechai Vanunu is released, but not free. Oppressive restrictions have been placed on him by Israeli authorities, based on 1945 British Mandate emergency regulations. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) is representing Vanunu in an appeal challenging the draconian restrictions to Israel's High Court. The restrictions include: not being allowed to leave Israel, not being allowed to come within a certain distance of embassies, ports, and borders; not being allowed to travel within Israel beyond the city of his residence without advance permission; not being allowed to speak about his work at Dimona; not being allowed to speak to the foreign press; and limits on and monitoring of phone and internet use.

The injustice of not being allowed to leave Israel is compounded by the fact that Vanunu has received threats on his life from ultra-right wing Israeli extremists. A Maariv (newspaper) internet poll two days after his release asked the question, "What should be done with Vanunu?" and listed "killed" as one of several choices.

We must let Israel know that they should lift the restrictions and allow Mordechai Vanunu to leave Israel immediately.

We hope to publish this petition along with signatures in one or more Israeli newspapers. To add your name, please return the enclosed slip with your signature as soon as possible, or send an email or fax giving your approval to [fax number and email address as above]. Please indicate whether we should include an organizational or other affiliation.

Thanks very much for your support.

Best wishes,

Ernest Rodker

The Petition

To Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Justice Minister Tomy Lapid and Attorney General Menachem Mazuz:

He has served his full sentence, and is not charged with any offenses.
