In 1986 Mordechai Vanunu told the world about the secret Nuclear Weapons factory in the Dimona desert - proving that Israel had a huge arsenal of weapons of mass destruction.

Because he made truth known, Morde was kidnapped by Mossad agents, shipped back to Israel in a cargo ship, and sentenced to 18 years in prison for the crimes of treason, espionage and the betrayal of state secrets. He spent the first eleven and a half years in solitary confinement!

This year, on April 21st 2004, Mordechai Vanunu is finally scheduled for release, having served his full term. Will the Israeli government actually release Morde on April 21, or will they find an excuse to keep him locked away? I will be at Ashkelon prison on April 21 to find out.

Morde Vanunu and I are actually old friends. We met back in Sydney in 1986. He joined the church where I was working, and we discussed issues of peace and disarmament together. Since his kidnapping, Morde and I have been sending letters to each other each month. After 18 years of letters, we will (God willing) finally meet up again on April 21.
