Partners in the Good Fight

When one man dreams, it is just a dream, but when we all dream together, it is the beginning of a new reality.

Dom Helder Camara

Welcome Fighter

Much has been happening in our world since we last spoke, so much of which is very disturbing:

  • The death toll in Afghanistan has risen dramatically.

  • North Korea has launched another rocket.

  • Israel has hijacked a boat full of aid-workers and human-rights activists on route to Gaza.
And yet, according to radio and television, only one event of any significance has taken place in the last month - the death of Michael Jackson.

How is it that the death of an entertainer can figure more highly in the public consciousness than the murder of any number of innocents or  the most serious of human rights abuses?

It's all a part of the way our media works - distracting us with trivialities while the world burns.

Father Dave

I'm reminded of Kierkegaard's story of the clown who, in the middle of a show, realises that the theatre is on fire.  He rushes out to warn the audience, but they just laugh and applaud, assuming that he is acting.  So, Kierkegaard suggested, the world would come to an end - with most of us laughing and applauding, thinking it's all just a part of the show!

Twitter Video Tutorials

What's news on ?

There's plenty to pass on this week:
  • Firstly, a welcome to our newest members of the order, Laurie Ryan, Pastor and martial arts master,  Nelson Colon, and preacher and poet Peter Menkin.

  • And special thanks to this most recent member - Fighting Father Peter - whose contribution to our site has been prolific. He's added nearly 50 poems and sermons thus far, so many of which are beautifully presented in audio and video as well as in written form. Do take time to look over some of Peter's work.  My favourite is a simple poem about visiting a Veterans Hospital in San Fransisco.

  • I've also been reasonably prolific myself in my publishing efforts over the last week, including my sermon on the 'Downward Mobility of Jesus' and a copy of the paper I gave this week at our American Civil War Roundtable  meeting, entitled "Why I don't like Abraham Lincoln".

  • I've also added a collection of some of our recent media articles, including my only appearance thus far in a US newspaper.  Click on the thumbnails above to see them individually or click here for a complete list.

  • I've also reprinted Uri Avnery's excellent analysis of the Iranian election, for those who are interested in moving beyond the hype.

  • Meanwhile, Fighting Father Tim Bellamy (who is due to be married next week ) has contributed a fascinating and uplifting post about the origin of his unusual hat.

  • On the forum, Fighting Fathers Keith and Alfamax have introduced some powerful discussion on the stages of faith that we pass through, while Dan and Jarey have provided us with videos and commentary on the subject of global sustainability.

  • Also from the forum (but reprinted here in the Fighitng Father blog) Keith asks the big question: "if the Holy Spirit is supposed to lead us into all truth, why doesn't she?" - a question that caused some consternation amongst my Twitter followers this week (but alas, only because I quoted Keith in his use of the pronoun 'she').

  • And finally, I earmarked a couple of remarkable videos on Israel/Palestine this week, guaranteed to inspire and encourage. Yes, there's not normally much news from that region that brings much joy, but take a look at this beautiful 46-second video, and if you enjoy that, settle back and watch this 20-minute inspiring story.

Thanks for the wonderful contribution so many of you have made in this last week.

Virtual Pulpit
Jesus Needs His Sleep!

"A violent windstorm came up, and the waves began breaking into the boat, so that the boat was rapidly becoming swamped. But Jesus was in the back of the boat, asleep on a cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to die?"
(Mark 4:37-38)

The story is recorded in Mark 4, and of course it has a rather spectacular ending, and yet it's always befuddled me somewhat how Jesus managed to remain asleep in a boat that was filling with water, though in the end,
this is only one of a number of confusing questions raised by this passage

Father Dave
In truth, I wasn't particularly happy with this sermon, but I've included it this week because so many  others seemed to really enjoy it.  I suspect that's because so many of us are traversing life's storms

If you'd prefer the written version of this sermon, you'll find it here. members can also download the MP3 version of this from the 'Members Benefits' area or by right-clicking here and choosing 'save target as' (you'll need your member name and password).

No Prophet is Welcome in his Own Town

"Jesus left that place and went back to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were utterly amazed. They said, "Where did this man get all these things? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What great miracles are being done by his hands! This is the builder, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon, isn't it? His sisters are here with us, aren't they?" And they were offended by him."
(Mark 6:1-4)

The relationship between Jesus and his earthly family was always a tricky one.  At times it seemed that both were an embarrassment to the other!

Dr Keith Mascord
Why is it that familiarity always seems to breed contempt? How would we have felt about Jesus had we known HIm all His earthly life?  And is the modern quest for the 'historical Jesus' a genuine attempt to know HIm better, or rather an attempt to de-mystify the impenetrable aspects of His character? members can also download the MP3 version of this from the 'Members Benefits' area or by right-clicking here and choosing 'save target as'.

Video of the Week:
Israeli Navy seizes Relief Boat en route to Gaza

This is a story that has somehow been missed completely by most of the world's media.

On June 30th, the Greek-flagged vessel, "Spirit of Humanity" was hi-jacked by the Israeli Navy while in International waters.  The crew, including former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and Noble laureate Mairead Maguire, were imprisoned.  The ship was carrying three tonnes of medical supplies, cement, olive trees and children's toys, and was attempting to bring relief to the people of Gaza. Subsequent to this report, 19 of the 21 people imprisoned have been deported.  All aid supplies were confiscated.

The good news is that a new convoy is being launched - headed up by Vietnam War Veteran, Kevin Kovic and Scottish MP, George Galloway.

I'm finding that I'm having unprecedented success with Twitter.  Indeed, by the time you read this, I'll hopefully have 10,000 Twitter followers - people who share my interests, read my articles, and help support us in our work.

Twitter seems to be working brilliantly for me but I do have a secret fear - that I'll turn on my computer one day to find that I've been  Twitter-Slapped and that my account has been shut down.  My experiences with Google and GoDaddy have left me in no doubt about the brutal way these Internet giants work.

For the same reason I'm particularly glad that Todd Gross has come out with a guide on how to prevent getting your account
Twitter-Slapped - things to do, things to avoid, things you should never tweet about, etc. Nothing is foolproof, but forewarned is forearmed. I purchased my copy of Twitter-Slap as soon as it came on the market. If you're a Twitterholic, I'd encourage you to do the same.

Before I let you go today, I've got three invitations to pass on - two only apply if you're going to be in Sydney.  One has no such limitations:

  • On July 15 at 6.30pm - Our Anglican community of the Holy Trinity is sharing fellowship with the Catholic Community of St John (Father Elias' Order), who are visiting Australia this month. Join us at Holy Trinity at 6.30pm for prayers followed by a BBQ in the Youth Centre.

  • On July 26 at 9am we have a very special guest preacher joining us at Holy Trinity - Anthony Venn-Brown, the church's unofficial ambassador to the Gay and Lesbian community.

Anthony was at one time one of Sydney's most prominent evangelists and preachers, and a pioneer in communicating the Gospel to young people using rock music and dance.  He now gives himself full time to trying to break down barriers of prejudice and fear between the churches and the GLBT community.

  • On the same day we hope to do a teleconference phone linkup with Anthony so that all members of our online community will be able to meet the man and ask their questions.

Full details on how to get on the call will be posted to the Teleconference section of the Fighting Fathers Members site.
Anthony Venn-Brown

And if you'd like to meet Anthony before our meeting date, you can message him directly through his Fighting Fathers profile.  You might also like to take a look Anthony's Free2B forum and his excellent book: A Life of Unlearning: a journey to find the truth
May the Lord bless and strengthen you for the work to which you have been called.

Yours in the Good Fight,

P.S. If you're free to join us for our weekly online web-chat, we meet every Sunday in the Fighting Fathers Video Web-chat room. We meet at noon, Greenwich Mean time, which translates as 10pm Sydney time, 8am USA East Coast, 5am on the West Coast, and ... you can work out the rest.

P.P.S. If you missed out on the last ezine, you can access back issues here.

P.P.P.S. If you haven't done so yet, please do me a favour and download and install my special RSS notifier from here. It solves the problem of my emails to you not getting through.
