 The View from my Corner

It's good to be back with you again, my friend, after another month of pain and passion.

We've had death hit our parish family, not once but multiple times in this last month, and this is not easy to come to terms with. Additionally, the news that our brother, Morde Vanunu, has been sentenced to further prison time for the crime of exercising his (supposed) right to free speech, makes me grit my teeth and wonder what to do next.

At the same time though, God is gracious and we have seen some wonderful things taking place here lately, most especially with our youth work.

Our Friday-night youth group staged an impressive '40-hour Famine' sleep-over, to help raise funds to aid developing communities, and we're also seeing some real breakthroughs with our Youth Drop-in Centre kids.

A group of American girls have come on board as volunteers, and they've made a real impact!

They've been baking cookies for our kids and teaching 'step' (or 'stomp' or something like that) where the kids jump around slapping themselves and it's supposed to look really cool! Whatever!

All I know is that it all adds up to the best clean fun we've had in this place in ages!

Most exciting of all though are the discussions I've been having with some Islander gentlemen in our area - men such as Newtown Jet's front-rower, Charlie Tonga, and footballer-turn-pro-boxer, Solomon Haumono.

I'm sensing that God has something in mind here - linking our boys and girls to these wonderful adult Christian role models.

'The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn't come any closer yet to putting it out!.

 This Month's Special Offer

Q: How do you help out a poor guy?

The obvious answer is to "give him some money", and that's the best response most of us can make, most of the time. But there is a better response: 'give the guy a job'.

Lots of us are struggling at the moment, and we know that the Internet can be a source of income as well as entertainment, but most people - including those who need it most - don't have the expertise to start generating income online and don't know where to find it.

Enter - a simple system in online income generation, where you don't need a fortune to get started and you don't need your own website.

Now before you get too excited, I want to make very clear that:

  • will NOT make you rich overnight.
  • It is NEVER likely to generate more than $1000 per month
  • Whatever you do achieve will be a direct result of the time you put into it!

Yet from my point of view, this is also the beauty of the system!

  • You set aside some time to work on it every day.
  • You see direct results for your efforts (making money from day one)!
  • You get yourself back into a disciplined working routine.

I'm sure you can see what the big picture is for me here. I'm truly hoping that will end up making a big difference to a lot of people, and I am personally committed to working with all team members until they reach the magic figure of $1000 per month.

Frankly, even if you're not hard up or unemployed, may still achieve a lot for you. It is a self-duplicating, viral, MLM system. This means that if you get in early, you reap the greatest benefits. If you enrol yourself, you can refer others, and get a commission every time one of your referrals comes into the system.

OK. Enough said. Can you spare a few minutes to take a closer look now?

 For Your Diary

This has to be the biggest and most action-packed month for me in years (and may turn out to be the most stressful). We're putting on four major events over the next four weeks, and I'm hoping that you can be a part of them:

Friday, August 24th:
The Imam and the Pastor

We are screening this movie jointly with our friends from the Imam Husein Islamic Centre in Earlwood.

The Imam and the Pastor is a heart-warming documentary film about working together for peace and about the power of forgiveness. For the flyer, click here.

When: Friday August 24th, 8pm.
Where: The Imam Husein Islamic Centre, Earlwood

The Imam and the Pastor

Sunday, August 26th:
Jets at Prayer

This is the first ever Newtown Rugby League Football Club prayer and worship service, and will feature former Newtown Jets player and American Gridiron star, Manfred Moore, along with a host of other athletic and spiritual talent. For the flyer, click here.

When Sunday August 26th, 9am
Where: Holy Trinity Church, Dulwich Hill

Manfred Moore

Sunday, September 2nd:
Visitors from Bethlehem

This will probably be the most exciting event of the whole month, if it all goes ahead as planned - a visit from Dr Victor Baterseh, the Mayor of Bethlehem. I say, 'if it all goes ahead' because the Australian authorities seem to be making the Mayor's visit as difficult as possible - holding off on issueing Dr Baterseh a visa until the deadline for his departure flight had already passed!

I am still hoping to have the Mayor join us for worship at Holy Trinity on September 2nd, with his parish priest, Father Amjad Sabarra, preaching. I'm also hoping to host a dinner on Wednesday August 29.

Dr Victor Batarseh

I won't go into who is opposing the Mayor's visit and why. Suffice it to say that Bethehem is a Palestinian city, in the middle of the occupied West Bank, and that there are powerful forces at work in this country and around the world that do not want more attention focused on the human rights situation in Palestine.

Let me also say here that I consider it a national disgrace that this man - whose many supporters include Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former US President, Jimmy Carter - could be refused entry by this Government. SHAME AUSTRALIA!

When: Sunday September 2nd, 9am
Where: Holy Trinity, Dulwich Hill
(with hopefully lots of other events that I'll confirm with you soon - stay tuned!)

Saturday, September 15th:
Christians vs. Lions XXII

And last, but by no means least, our 23rd fight-night fundraiser - Christians v Lions XXII.

The card is not setlled yet, but we'll have a number of enthusiastic young locals putting their bodies on the line for the first time to raise funds for our Youth Centre, and I'm hoping to have that character on the right involved too - boxer champ, pro footballer and Christian crusader, Solomon Haumono. Stay tuned!

When: Saturday, September 15th, 7pm
Where: Petersham RSL Club, Petersham

 Sermon of the Month

Let Justice Roll Down like Waters!

This scandalous treatment of both my friend, Morde Vanunu, and his neighbour, the Mayor of Bethlehem, have prompted me to make my exposition on the Old Testament book of Amos my sermon of the month.

The Bible is full of preachers and prophets who campaign for a more human society in the name of God, but nobody, I think, quite nailed it as powerfully as did that eighth century Southerner, Amos!

If you're not familiar with the book (and a surprising number of Christians are not), prepare yourself for a shock. Grab a cup of coffee, but make sure you're sitting down before you hit the play button.

You'll also find the written version here.

 Sites of the Month

I've got six subscriber sites to show off this month (including one mine). Together they testify to the wonderful depth and creativity of the Fighting Fathers Community. I commend them to you.

Camp Connect

I know I've mentioned Camp Connect before, but I love their work, and Brand has asked me to mention that there's a new camp scheduled for August/September.

Camp Connect uses time away to help non-custodial fathers re-connect with their kids. For full details on the up-coming camp, click here.

Hugh Simpson is a man with a 'lifetime mission': "ending homelessness for the over 1 billion people around the world without the usual way of giving a handout!"

Hugh's concept is as innovative as it is brilliant. It's all still in its infancy at this stage, but this is a site to bookmark and check back on regularly. Click here.

Retired Boxers Foundation

One gentleman who I've only recently had the pleasure of meeting (through subscriber Warren Spooner) is 'The Bronx Bomber", Alex Ramos.

After an illustrious boxing career, Alex has started the "Retired Boxers Foundation" to assist retired professional boxers in the transition from their glorious days in the ring to a dignified retirement. Click here to pay 'The Bomber' a visit.

Retired Boxers Foundation

Here's one of the best ideas I've heard of in ages - a social networking site (ie. like MySpace) that actually shares their advertising revenue with you!

Apparently MySpace gets millions each year in advertising income, so while it does offer a genuine service, it's a service that pays its owners very well. offers the same service. The only difference is that you get a share of their advertising income!

You can check out my Yuwie site (nb. only just started) here or sign up yourself here. It costs nothing.

Father Ted's News

Here's an excellent online offering from everybody's favourite forum personality - the ineffable Father Ted.

Like yours truly, my English clerical counterpart manages to blend together preaching, Biblical teaching and a touch of Internet Marketing quite seamlessly! Click here.

Despite her name, Lee Grant says she has no connection with the American Civil War whatsoever!

Even so, she is a is a great mother, an amazing photographer and a lovely human being. You'll catch a glimpse of that photographic talent here. For the rest ... you'll have to meet her.

OK, that's six of the best that I've seen this month. Keep forwarding me details on your own sites and recommending other URL's of interest. And if you have comments on the sites mentioned today, please have your say on the forum.

 Fight Interview of the Month

Alex Jones interviews Aaron Russo

I know that this is normally our spot for interviewing a great ring fighter. I decided this time that we'd feature a fighter of another kind - movie producer and political activist, Aaron Russo

Russo started in film in 1972 when he began managing Bette Middler, after which he went on to produce two classic movies: The Rose (1979) and Trading Places (1983).

Aaron Russo

In the early 1990's Russo moved into politics, running for governor, and making more films, the most recent being, "America: Freedom to Fascism".

In this interview, Russo talks about the string of Governement lies that gave birth to the 'war on terror', starting with 9/11, which he believes was an inside job, and how his friendship with Nick Rockefeller helped him to understand how and why the governments are trying to control their people through fear.

You can call him a crazy conspiracy theorist or a national hero, but you owe it to yourself to hear Russo out before making up your mind.
