 The View from my Corner

Hi mate,

It's hard to believe that we're already in the second month of 2007!

I'm beginning to realise that time moves a lot faster as you get older. I'm about to turn 45 now, and time is whizzing past!

Remember when we were children, we measured our years in increments - 'I'm four and a half now'.

It was always an eternity between birth- days when we were little, but once you reach adulthood ... well, I could have sworn I only turned 30 a few weeks ago!

Mind you, one place where time always moves slowly is in prison.

I had the opportunity to spend time with my friend and mentor, Ray Williams, last weekend, who is still 'doing time', for reasons best known to those who wield the political stick.

Similarly, I've been trying to make phone contact (unsuccessfully so far) with my friend Morde Vanunu, who is no longer locked up in Ashkelon prison, but who is not truly free either, as he still can't get permission to leave Israel.

And I think of all our brothers and sisters in Gaza - a city that has been sealed off with fences and checkpoints to become one enormous prison. And like all prisons, it is becoming an increasingly violent place to live.

Perhaps the real issue with time is not so much the speed at which it moves, but how much control we have over how we use it.

Let's not take for granted the degree to which we are able to do as we please with our time, and let's use that freedom to make the most of the time we have on this planet.

Your brother in the Good Fight,

P.S. In case you hadn't heard, our brother Morde Vanunu was again recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, as he has been every year since 1986, but this time by none other than Archbishop Desmond Tutu! We can only hope and pray that this will make some sort of difference.

 This Month's Special Offer
Understanding Addiction
(ebook and audio package)

If you are:

  • struggling with an addiction
    (to drugs, gambling, sex ...)

  • Trying to help a friend with an addiction

  • Just trying to understand why addicted persons behave the way they do,

The "Understanding Addiction" ebook and audio package will help you develop a deeper understanding of how addictions work and how addicted persons can find healing and help.

Understanding Addiction

I have been working with addicted persons for most of my working life. I've had addicted persons live with me, share their struggles with me, and steal from me. I've had many addicted friends, and I've buried a number of those friends.

I can say in all honesty that nothing has given me deeper insight into the nature of addiction and the addictive personality than "Understanding Addiction".

 For Your Prayers

Bassam al Aramin

Subscribers to my weekly Partners ezine will have to forgive me for highlighting this man once again, but for me he symbolises all that is hopeful in the Middle East.

Bassam is the father of the young schoolgirl, Abeer al Aramin, who was shot in the head and killed by IDF forces in Gaza recently.

Bassam, who referred to his daughter as his 'best friend', has nonetheless refused to give in to the desire to take vengeance. Instead he has recommitted himself to the non-violent pursuit of peace!

Bassam was once a Palestinian militant himself, and did seven years in an Israeli gaol for his involvement in the armed struggle.

After his release though, Bassam joined, 'Combatants for Peace' - a group made up of former Palestinian militants and former Israeli soldiers, who work alongside one another to try to end the cycle of violence.

I've included a brief ABC interview below (I'm sure the ABC won't mind). Take two minutes to listen to it, and keep this great man in your prayers.

 Sermon of the Month

The Greatest of these is Love

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I give over my body to be burned, but do not have love, I gain nothing.." (1 Corinthians 13)

It's one of the most familiar passages in the New Testament, and always a favourite at weddings. But what did Paul mean by telling us that we have to love. Surely they didn't mean that we have to be in love with everybody!

This passage in Paul's first letter to the Corinthians is a great place to unpack the real meaning of love, according to the New Testament. See if you come to the same conclusions as I did. Click here to read the print version, or activate the virtual pulpit, using the buttons below.

 Sites of the Month

Six of the best sites and articles that I've come across this month.
Keep sending me the links to your sites so that I can mention them.

This is the group, mentioned above, made up of former Palestinian militants and former Israeli soldiers. Their slogan is, "only by joining forces, will we be able to end the cycle of violence".

I'd encourage you to visit their site, read their stories, watch their videos and support their cause.

Let our Children Live

Another person whose courage and integrity I'd like to celebrate this month is Dr Nurit Peled-Elhanan.

Dr Peled-Elhanan is a courageous Jewish woman who is a friend and fellow peace-worker with Bassam al Aramin, and, like him, lost a child in the violence of the Israel/Palestine conflict - in a suicide bomb attack in Jerusalem when her daughter was only 13.

As well as allowing me to reprint her article, I also received her permission to quote something to you from a recent email she sent me:

Dr Nurit Peled-Elhanan

"I received the Sakharov Prize for human rights and the freedom of speech by the European Parliament in 2001 together with the poet Izzat Gazawi, another Palestinian Peace militant who lost his son in the schoolyard, shot by an Israeli soldier while he was rushing to help a wounded friend.

Gazzawi died of humiliation 3 years ago. His heart couldn't take it any more. In his last email to me about soldiers bursting into his house at night, destroying, breaking, soiling and frightening the children, he wrote: I think they are trying to silence my voice. Lets us all see to it that his voice is never silenced."

Make sure you read her excellent article, 'Let our Children Live'.

St Veronicas Welfare Committee

'Put a smile on a child's face for as little as $75'. Come up with the money and the team at St Veronicas will help make it happen.

Ange was originally paid to create this site, but in the process, she became so enthusiastic about the work these people do that now she's giving it all back to them in sponsorships!

$75 will give a child in India an education for a year. Ange says that's less than the price of a haircut. I say, 'not where I get my hair cut', but I get her point.

Find Hot Markets

And here's an ingenious membership site, developed by one of our subscribers - Gray Arrive - to help Internet Marketers find Hot Markets.

Many marketers make the mistake of spending an inordinate amount of time searching for hot products to promote. The key though is to stop focusing on hot products, and look instead for hot markets.

Finding a hot market though is hard work, and takes a fair degree of expertise. Well ... It's less hard work now, as Gray has put in the hard yards for you.

Day Job Killer - will it change the NET forever?

If you're aware of what's going on in the Internet Marketing world, you'll know that 'Day Job Killer' may prove to be the most successful product launch of all time.

The author is famous for making millions online each year, simply through promoting other people's products, and now he says he's decided to share his techniques.

And Now for Something Completely Different ...

I thought I'd better finish off with something completely ridiculous, just so that you know I don't take myself too seriously.
