 The View from my Corner

lHello my friends,

lHow was your October? It was a tough but amazing month for me.

It all started for me when I stirred up a storm with my Christians and Moslems can be Friends campaign.

I anticipated that some people would not take kindly to my attempt to build bridges between the Christian and Islamic communities, but I didn't really expect the torrent of abuse I received!

Lots of people told me that the Sheikh was lying. One guy even told me that I was lying, and was not really a Christian priest at all! Others just heaped on abuse with no real rationale behind it.

Of course, balancing these were some wonderful testimonials, such as the heart-warming words of Mustafa, who testifies from Istanbul, "I have lots of Jewish and Christian friends here and we are not fighting and they have churches and synangouges here."

I'll be extending the campaign this month, and you can expect a second interview with my friend Sheikh Mansour any day now.

I will continue to vet comments though. You'll have to forgive me if this makes the presentation appear one-sided, but I think there's enough Moslem-bashing going on in the community without me needing to replicate it on www.fatherdave.org.

October was also a big month for Father Dave's Fight Club, where both Doug Whillis and Paul Quinlin came up with some big wins - Paul even qualifying to represent our state in the National boxing titles in Tasmania.

October was also a special month for me with my kids, as Ange was away in Italy for most of those weeks, which gave me plenty of focused time as a dad. It was tough but wonderful.

Towards the end of the month we saw Israel start a renewed offensive against Gaza, while here in Sydney, political leaders of all persuasions joined together to condemn local sheikh, Al Hilaly, for some comments he made about women who dress provokatively.

I find myself ending the month where I began it - sensing the need to throw more energy into my friends campaign. I remain convinced that there are forces at work that aim to divide Christian from Moslem, Moslem from Jew. These forces are powerful and are currently proving very successful.

Now is the time for God's people to refuse to be made captive to fear and hatred. Now is the time for us who believe in the ultimate power of love to shine as lights to the world.

Your brother in the Good Fight,

Dave

 Sermon of the Month

"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

The passage is from Mark 10 and, yes, these apparently harsh and legalistic rulings come from the Lord Jesus Himself!

Is divorce and remarriage really the unforgiveable sin, as this passage would suggest? Certainly the church has regularly taken it that way - treating divorced persons as second-class citizens.

Frankly, I think this might be one of the most important sermons I have ever delivered. See what you think. You can find the written version here or use the buttons below to listen now.

Would you like to have the full MP3 version of these
sermons regularly podcasted for you? Click here.

 Sites of the Month

Of the six sites I've chosen this month, three are subscribers' sites that are guaranteed to do you some good, and three are sites where you can immediately do some good - helping a family in Gaza, fighting disease, working for peace.

Ceasefirecampaign.org

Here's your chance to have your say about the nuclear stand-off between the US and Iran. Ceasefirecampaign.org are compiling a petition, calling upon the US government to initiate diplomatic talks with Iran.

Normally I'd say that online petitions are a reasonably ineffective way of getting your voice heard, but the guys at ceasefirecampaign.org are serious about their work and have had outstanding results thus far.

The site includes a picture of the last petition of 320,000 signatures - calling upon Israel to halt the destruction of Lebanon - being delivered to the UN Security Council before their vote.

Help the Ghalia Family

Here is one very tangible way to make a difference to the lives of at least one family in Gaza.

The Ghalia family were accidentally hit by an Israeli shell while sunning themselves on a beach in Gaza. Seven family members were killed, including both parents.

This site has been set up by friends of the family to help the surviving family members get much-needed medical treatment.

Yeshua-Do

This is the site of subscriber Vitold Jordan - a brother in both Christian ministry and the fighting arts.

Vitold has an extraordinary training and teaching background, particularly in the Japanese arts of Aikido and Iaido, and after his Christian conversion founded Yeshua-Do - a Christian martial art that attempts to marry the best of the bushido tradition with the Biblical concept of the Christian warrior.

Yeshua-Do is the 'Sacred path of the Christian warrior' or the 'Art of Peace'.

Join a Folding@Home Team

Here's a bizarre way to be directly involved in finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease, Cystic fibrosis, Mad Cow disease, and other ailments caused through bad protein folding.

Simply download the folding software, and when your computer is not in use, your processor power will be harnessed by the team from Stanford University and will get to work on protein analysis!

Sons of Confederate Veterans - Camp 68

This site was constructed by my friend (and subscriber) Cibby Krell, and is the official website of the SCV in Spartanburg , South Carolina.

This site is packed full of useful information on all things Southern, including some excellent tunes, some invaluable memoirs from Robert E. Lee, and some rather powerful arguments proving that the South had every right (morally and legally) to secede from the Union, and probably still does!

-Engineered Thoughts

Here's a site from subscriber Wayne Pitura that defies simple classification. Wayne describes himself as an engineer with an "inane interest in personal development".

Wayne publishes an ezine known as, 'The Quote', which is anything but inane. You can subscribe to 'The Quote' or go through the ezine's complete archive at www.engineeredthoughts.com
