 The View from my Corner

Well, we're back from our week's holiday, and I must say that I feel a little like a soldier returning to the trenches after a brief furlough. I hop back down into the trench and the carnage continues!

I spent much of today in prison - a fairly stark contrast from the soaring snow-covered peaks of New Zealand. Having said that, getting the chance to spend time with Ray Williams again did give the place its own strange beauty.

So much of life seems to me to be like this - a strange intermingling of violence and grace. We find tragedy everywhere - even in a country as fortunate as Australia - and yet within every tragedy we continue to find reasons for thanksgiving.

Let me focus on the positives today. There are many:

  • Our brother George Caz took the job of onsite manager at Binacrombi, and he is doing great! If you don't know the story, George found out about our dilemma through this newsletter a couple of months ago. He read about it, prayed about it, and
then he rang me up and told me that God had told him to drop everything and go. God made a fine choice. :-)

  • After enjoying doing that TV spot with Andrew Denton, it looks like I'll be getting to meet another of my favourite TV people soon - John Saffron. The details are sketchy at this stage, but apparently he's putting together some show on religion in boxing, and I guess I was an obvious choice. I'll keep you posted.

  • As we struggle to find the finances to keep our Youth Centre going, it seems that the Lord has been sending more volunteers
to us. I've had two guys show up in recent weeks, telling me that God had sent them to me, and asking for instructions. I directed them to the Youth Centre.

  • Another terrific character that the Lord sent to us recently is Warren Fellows - best remembered for his arrest in Bangkok in 1978, and the 12 years he spent in a Thai gaol for drug trafficking. Warren evidently found God in goal, but sadly, after 15 years back in Oz, no one had thought to invite him to church ... until now. We'll be sharing the Eucharist tomorrow morning. :-)

  • We've released a new version of Ezine-Express this month, and I don't think I ever expected to feel so proud of a software product! The feedback from users so far has been fantastic, and it's just great to feel that we are making a significant contribution to the publishing community. :-)

  • And last, but by no means least, I have been somewhat overwhelmed this last month by the support I have received from so many of you guys. Words of encouragement, like this one from Nick (it's on the page somewhere), strengthen me enormously. And the support you've been giving me in your emails, your donations, and through your prayers is deeply appreciated.

Let me sum up with two statements: God is Good and I love you guys.

I've included some holiday snaps below. I hope you like them. New Zealand is indeed a beautiful place. I'll add in a picture I took of Ange with Warren Fellows too. I have a feeling that the Lord has some exciting work for us to do together.

May the Lord bless and strengthen you for the work to which you have been called.

 For Your Prayers

Little has changed for my buddy, Morde Vanunu. His great hope is still that he might soon be allowed to leave Israel and start a new life somewhere else. Nothing has changed for him yet, but at least that means that he has not been returned to prison!

Morde Vanunu & me

Meanwhile, the landscape around about Morde is changing dramatically!

With the Gaza pullout completed, a window of opportunity for a genuine and lasting peace appeared. But that window now seems all but closed, with Palestinian militants shelling Israel, and Israel responding with more targeted assassinations!

One of the most disturbing developments in recent days was a pamphlet drop carried out by the Israeli army over the Gaza Strip, warning residents that any further home-made rocket attacks from their area could result in devastating F-16 fighter attacks against civilian areas (read the full story here)!

Even so, courageous peace activists from both sides of the border continue to put their bodies on the line. You may have missed the heart-warming story of Jacob Allegro, famous Dutch pianist and holocaust survivor, who recently played concerts in the Palestinian villages of Bil'in and Ramallah, to protest the occupation.  Sermon of the Month

Nowhere in the Bible is that mysterious combination of violence and grace more evident that in the fiery story Jesus told about the vineyard owner and his corrupt tenants, recorded in Matthew 21!

The owner sends his representatives to his tenants and asks for rent. The representatives get abused, so the owner sends more reps, even a member of his own family, and the abuse continues! How long will the vineyard owner allow this cycle of fruitless violence to continue?

I have found this year that, more than ever, I am gripped by these parables from the latter part of Matthews Gospel, and this one is possibly the most gripping of the bunch. I commend it to you. Click here.

 Sites of the Month

For your prayers:

On the Streets of America

This has to be one of the most hilarious and disturbing pieces of video footage I have ever seen. I suggest you right-click the link and choose 'save as', especially if you are an Australian, as you will want to share this with your friends and family. I won't spoil it by telling you any more about it, except that it's about 3 megabytes in size. Right-click here.

Ira Lipke's photo album

Not humorous but heart-warming are these pics of life in Palestine from Ira Limpke. Ira is s friend of Morde Vanunu's, and it is Morde who has forwarded this to us. Click here.

For your health:

This is the site of Soulcare counselling service, run by my friend, Dave Irwin. Dave is the first guy I refer people to for counselling, and the first guy I go to myself when I need a specialist. Dave's site has been designed and built by Ange - yet another reason to recommend it! Click here.

Age Gauge

And just in case you were wanting to really know how old you were, here's something that serves no useful purpose whatsoever, apart from helping you to feel your age. Click here.

For online success:

The Lead Generation MBA

This site was recommended to me by Sam Beatson - a long-time subscriber and a good mate. Sam swears that this is the best course in Internet Traffic Generation that he's ever come across, and from what I've seen of it, these guys definitely do know what they're on about. It comes with a premium price tag, but if you can afford it, this may be just the thing you're looking for? Click here.

Slyck's Guide to Spyware Removal

At the opposite end of the price spectrum comes this excellent guide and assortment of spyware detectors. Unfortunately, I find that it seems to take two or three different spyware applications to pick up all the rubbish that unscrupulous advertisers try to sneak on to my machine. The up-side is that most of the best spyware detectors available are still free! Get the complete story, and complete protection for your machine here.

Yes, it's part three of our interview with Australian Kickboxing legend, Paul Grima, and this time we drill the Pitbull for stories of his greatest moments in the sport, including his two battles with the great Queensland ex-Taekwondo champion (and Barry Manilo look-alike) Steve Vick.

If you're wondering how Paul got his reputation as one of Australia's toughest men in the ring, Click here.
