Partners in the Good Fight

When one man dreams, it is just a dream, but when we all dream together,
it is the beginning of a new reality.

Dom Helder Camara

Welcome Fighter

Well, the time is almost upon us! I am now officially 50 years old, and it's time for me to take my shot at breaking the world record for the greatest number of continuous rounds of boxing!

In truth, breaking the official record should not be too difficult, as the Guiness Book of World Records only recognises a record of 25 rounds. There is an unofficial record though of 111 rounds. I'll be attempting 120, and so hope to break them both.

The date of the big event is April 1st, which is both April Fools Day and Palm Sunday - coincidence or Providence?

We'll be starting at midday and, if I complete the 120 rounds, we'll wrap up at 8pm. There is no charge for coming along to watch, though you will be encouraged to make a donation to the Youth Centre while you're there.

At time of writing you can still register to do a round or two with me (nb. maximum 4). Just email Fighting Father Denning.

There is a $20 registration fee for those who want to fight, and you should bring your own mouthguard and hand-wraps (though I'll try to make sure we've got spares there for sale).

Father Dave's 120-round boxing challenge

Anyway, I won't prattle on as the details are on the poster, and if you don't know how to find our gym/church hall, there's a map on the Dulwich Hill Gym website.

You can download the poster in various formats to help us promote the event:

  • Click here for an A4 PDF of the poster (for emailing to your friends)
  • Click here for an A4 PDF of the poster that has a margin (for printing and posting up somewhere)
  • Click here for an 800 by 600 size JPEG image (for posting to your website or Facebook)
  • Click here for a 640 by 480 size JPEG image, as the one above is probably far too big!

You'll see from the poster that our list of celebrity boxers is fantastic. Not only are old mates like Sol Haumono, Lovemore N'dou, Nader Hamdan, and Sol Egberime involved, but both Mundines (Anthonies Junior and Senior)! And to top it off, my two favourite men in Australian media are both participating - John Saffron and Andrew Denton! I just hope I survive long enough to make it worthwhile for all of them!

The other great news is that we're already well on our way to reaching our target of raising $10,000 for our Youth Centre. Indeed, I'm hopeful that this fundraiser will exceeed all expectations and allow us to do some really creative things for our young people in the year to come!

So please join us on April 1st - in the ring or in the audience - and if you can't be there in person, boxing or cheering, we'll try to have a live video-cast of the whole event so that you can still be a part of it all. And either way, you are welcome to make a donation through the Holy Trinity Website. Receipts are available on request.

Father Dave What's News

On the right is the Twitter Feed of my 30 most recent posts. I use Twitter to log my online activity and promote the work of our members.

In the last month I've been impressed with much of the work our members are coming out with, such as Fighting Father Peter's work on The Child Custody Guide.

I've also been impressed with some of the grass-roots anti-war noise that's being heard in the Middle East. These videos expressing love between Israelis and Iranians are quite touching.

I promise I'll follow you back.

Virtual Pulpit: Before I was a Muslim I was a Christian!

Before you get too concerned, be assured that the above sermon title is a quote from something a friend said to me.

Having said that, I've been accused of secretly being a Muslim numerous times. This doesn't bother me at all. Indeed, if the label 'Christian' is nothing more than a badge that expresses loyalty to a particular tribe, I don't want the label!

I certainly don't think our Lord Jesus ever wanted to give his followers a religious branding that would distance them from sisters and brothers who didn't share their faith! As Bishop Tutu reminded us recently, "God is not a Christian!"

Having said all that, this sermon isn't really about racism or religious bigotry. It's about the Biblical concept of covenant, and about how God's covenant with Noah affirms the love of God for all people, regardless of race or religion. Perhaps that means it is about racism and religious bigotry? I'll let you be the judge.

To read the sermon click here, or you can download the audio version for later listening from the member site, or just click the button below to listen now.

Note that you can download the MP3 version of all the sermons of the Fighting Fathers
from the Fighting Fathers Audio Sermon Library.

Video of the Month: Father Dave on Channel 7's Sunrise

It's been truly gratifying to get such good publicity for our fundraiser. First we found ourselves on the front cover of the local paper. Then a surprsie mention on Fox Sports, and then Sunrise called to line up this segment.

I'm happy to say too that Sunrise have committed themselves to being with us on April 1st and covering the event. I haven't heard back yet from Kochie (the male host) as to whether he's willing to get in the ring with me, but I remain hopeful!

To keep up to date with new video uploads, subscribe to Father Dave's video channel.

OK fighter, it's time to wind up this edition of The Good Fight, but (as per usual) I've saved a special suprise for the chosen few who actually read the ezine right through to the end!

For the last 15 months I've been working on a special eCourse, entitled "How 2 Change the World". This course is my attempt to pass on everything I know about how to make an impact on the world.

I don't want to say too much more about the course at this stage, except that only 30 chosen people have been given access to it thus far, and it will still be another month before we're ready to open it up to the general public.

Having said that, I am willing to allow a few more people into the course before the official opening. The only thing I ask in return is that you give me some feedback once you've completed the course, and a testimonial if you enjoy it.

Would you like special access to my "How 2 Change the World" course? Email me. I'm not going to make the signup page public at this stage, but I will send you the details if you ask (nicely). Email me if you're interested.

That's it for today.

May the Lord bless and strengthen you until next we meet.

Your brother in the Good Fight,

P.S. If you missed out on the last ezine, you can access back issues here.

P.P.S. If you haven't done so yet, please do me a favour and download and install my special RSS notifier from here. It solves the problem of my emails to you not getting through.
