Father Dave's Partner's Ezine

Partners in the Good Fight

When one man dreams, it is just a dream, but when we all dream together,
it is the beginning of a new reality.

Dom Helder Camara

Welcome Fighter

It's my first ezine for 2011, and I want to begin by giving a big thank you to all members. Thank you for your loyalty and support, for your creativity, and for you ongoing commitment to justice and peace. Thank you.

I am hoping that this year will be a productive one for all of us - one in which together we will make a real impact on the principalities and powers that threaten to destroy our world. And it is an important year for us to really make an impact, for I fear we could see the outbreak of World War III this year.

Perhaps you think I am being overly dramatic, but things in the Middle East seem to be unraveling fast. Once untouchable despots are falling like dominoes, all of which is very encouraging in itself, but it raises the big question: 'how will Israel react?'

As sympathetic dictators are replaced with leaders who more reflect the convictions of their people, Israel will inevitably find itself increasingly isolated on account of the Palestinian Occupation, which will never be accepted by her Arab neighbours

So will Israel do what needs to be done in order to set up a Palestinian state, or will they accept their isolation and rely on their military strength to solve their problems?

Father Dave

If the recent Israeli incursions into Lebanon are any indication, the signs are not at all encouraging. And if Israel goes to war with Lebanon again, Iran will almost certainly get involved this time, which will mean ... World War III (potentially).

You'll forgive my political rave, I hope. In all truth, I have zero interest in politics for its own sake. My interest is in human health, and my fear is that an enormous number of our sisters and brothers will suffer and die this year if certain tough decisions aren't made by some of the key people in power

Mind you, not all the signs are discouraging, and one of the most encouraging signs I'm seeing is the way in which ordinary people are playing key roles in shaping the world's future. And I'm not thinking only of the Egyptian protesters, but of people like Julian Assange and Bradley Manning and others who have had the courage to publish the truth - truth that seems to be changing the course of our world.

And that gives me hope for the work we do. We of the community are in the business of publishing truth, and publishing truth whether people want to hear it or not! May God grant us courage to speak the truth this year, and the wisdom to know how best to communicate it,

This Month's Freebie: Wordpress for Dumb-Dumbs

Wordpress for dumb-dumbs

OK, it's not the most brilliant book title in the world and the graphic leaves a lot to be desired, but I think when you read this book you'll agree that the authors focused their time and energy where it counted - on the content!

This is a solid 21-page introduction to building and maintaining a Wordpress blog. It covers all the basics, including themes and linking structures, and includes a useful glossary and links to a variety of popular plugins.  Wordpress Websites for Dumb-Dumbs is the perfect partner to the Wordpress video series that is also available at no charge to members in the Members' Benefits area of the site.

And in case you're wondering why I am pushing Wordpress so heavily, remember our offer to all paying members - to build a Wordpress website for you. Our offer is to build it and host it for you, and give you tips on how to monetize and develop your site further. It's all covered by your $10/month membership package.

And in case you're wondering about the quality of these free sites, take a look at one we're in the process of completing now: The content for this particular site was written entirely by one of our members.  He also chose and purchased his own domain name. We've done the rest.

There's still a fair bit to do on this site but with tools like the Wordpress videos and Wordpress for Dumb-Dumbs you will have the tools to develop a blog like this into something that is going to make a real impact on the world.  So download your Freebie of the Month now and let me know when you're ready for us to build your site.

Nb. The above link only works if you are already a member at If you're not, click here to sign up a the one-month free trial. You can download all the free software when you're on the trial.

What's News
On the right is the Twitter Feed of my 30 most recent posts.  I use Twitter to log my online activity and promote the work of our members.

A lot of the most recent feeds concern Egypt and the recent developments in the Middle East of course, I think though that you'll also find particularly interesting:

Virtual Pulpit: 20 Years in Dulwich Hill
"The wind blows where it wills. You hear its sound but you cannot tell whence it comes or whither it goes. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit!" (John 3:8)

As you probably know, it's not my usual practice to talk about my own experiences in my sermons.  I like to follow St Paul's maxim, "we preach not ourselves but Christ Jesus" (2 Corinthians 4:5). Even so, there is a time and place for sharing what you've learned over the years, and last December, on the 20th anniversary of my ministry at Holy Trinity Dulwich HIll, I figured that it was both the time and place

I chose John chapter 3 as my text, as I don't think any other passage in the Bible so well reflect my own experience of the unpredicable nature of God's activity.
Father Dave

So see what you think. I knew this was going to be a controversial sermon when I wrote it, and some will no doubt see this offering as the final proof of my departure from orthodox Christianity.  Of course I do not see it that way but consider the position I take in this sermon to be true to both the Bible and the Spirit of God. You be the judge

You can hear the sermon by clicking the play button below or you can watch and hear the entire thing on video by clicking here, or if you'd prefer the print version you can read that here.

Note that you can download the MP3 version of this sermon (and all the sermons of the Fighting Fathers) from the Fighting Fathers Audio Sermon Library

Video of the Month: My 20-Year Anniversary Rap!

When I was initially asked whether I intended to give a speech at my 20-year anniversary service I did give it some thought, but decided that rapping about my experience would be more authentic than talking about it.

At around the same time I heard Eminem's classic song 'Business' for the first time, and it struck me right away that the sentiments in the song mirrored so much of how I felt about my history with the church!

And so a re-translation of Eminem's classic rap tune began to germinate inside of me, eventually taking flower in the creation you see on the right. .

Of course you might consider my flower to be more of a weed, Either way, I think you'll agree that it's a reasonably unique offering

OK fighter, I think I've given you plenty to chew over in this ezine so I'll try not to keep you much longer. I did though want to keep you up to date with some of the things we have planned over the coming weeks and months as you might well want to get involved.
  1. March 2011 should see the launch of the Fighitng Fathers Novitiate Program in which we'll be training people in how to start their own Fight Clubs/Youth Ministries based on the model we have operating here. My hope is that by late 2011 we'll be able to send our new Fighting Fathers into communities where there are serious youth violence and drug problems, where they can really make a difference!

  2. Also scheduled for launch in March 2011 is our inter-faith radio show, featuring both myself and my dear friend Sheikh Mansour Leghaei. We'll be chatting about Christianity and Islam, and hopefully modelling a  pattern of respectful inter-faith dialogue.  This will be an Internet-based radio show, broadcasting from

  3. Our other big launch this year will be of the Binacrombi Wilderness Programme. This will be a 10-week program where we hope to host ten at-risk young people at Binacrombi and give them basic life-skills and fitness training. Our hope is that each of our participants will also end up with basic accreditation for a job in the fitness industry so that they can truly make a fresh start when they return from the bush.
In addition to these offline pursuits I'm hoping that we can really ramp-up our online work this year too, and one of our key focuses will be to get you publishing your own a blog (if you're not doing so already) so that you can share your passion with the world.  I certainly intend to ramp-up my own online publishing efforts this year too.

As I said, this year could be a big year, and we'll have to take our stand together if we want to make a difference. Are you ready to come out fighitng when the bell rings?  If so, expect to see me in your corner.

Your brother in the Good Fight,
