one man dreams, it is just a dream, but when we all dream together, it
is the beginning of a new reality.

Not only have I been enjoying the weather, but Ange and I got to go to
the movies this week and watch Inception
- a (relatively) new movie about a guy who puts ideas in other peoples'
minds through dreams, and the cleverness of the movie is that you're
never quite sure when the characters are dreaming and when they are
Ange wasn't so keen on that aspect of the movie but I thought it was
rather true to life, for it seems to me that vast numbers of people in
our community are living in a dream-world, and they too don't
realise that they are dreaming until they finally wake up!
How many people do you know who live in a world where all Muslim people
are scheming villains, spending their days doing little else than
thinking up new ways to take over the Western
world? Not long ago these same people lived in a world where communists
were hiding behind every corner, waiting to jump them. The
plot hasn't changed, only now the villains have swarthy skin and wear
turbans or hijabs.
way it's a dream (or perhaps a nightmare). It's a world that doesn't
exist except in the imagination of the dreamers. It's a dream
that has been constructed out of ideas placed in our minds
by media organisations and political propaganda machines. The
danger of course is that the more people get caught up in the dream,
the more the dream has the potential to destroy waking reality.
What our world needs is more dream-breakers - people who not only
refuse to buy in to the social pathology but who become instrumental in
waking up their contemporaries - people like Mordechai Vanunu.
Morde Vanunu grew up in a country (Israel) where the dominant narrative
was that the rest of the world was out to destroy his country and that
his people were justified in going to whatever lengths were necessary
in order to defend themselves. In 1976 Morde became involved in helping
develop nuclear weapons in a secret government facility, hidden under
the Negev desert.
But Morde started to question the dream. He made friends with Arab
students at Ben Gurion University. He found he couldn't agree with some
of his country's
military actions, such as the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, and in 1985 he
took a camera with him into the secret nuclear facility in Dimona and
took a series of photos - photos that would give the world its
first real evidence of Israel's massive nuclear capacity.
September 30th we remembered the 24th anniversary of Morde
Vanunu's kidnapping by Mossad agents that led to his 18-year sentence
in Ashkelon prison - all because he refused to buy into the dream his
government was selling, and decided that it was time to wake up his
I'm dedicating this ezine to my mate Morde, who I befriended
at church back in 1986. I've also created a Morde Vanunu Quiz
that will give you the facts about Morde's life, and reward you with a
copy of Letters from
Solitary - a selection of letters that Morde wrote to me
during his 11.5 years in solitary confinement, with commentary from the
late, great peace activist, Sam Day. Click here to take the

Virtual Pulpit: The Failure of the Resurrection!
"Even if someone should rise from
the dead they will not believe" (Luke 16:31).
So says Jesus Himself in a parable about
riches and poverty that otherwise doesn't seem to have anything to do
with the topic of resurrection! Even so, what's the point of
Jesus' resurrection if it doesn't convince anybody of the
truth? And why bring it up at all in this story? Surely this
is one of Jesus' most confusing parables!

Video of the Month: Morde Vanunu's 2004 Release
As we wonder anxiously what the future holds for my dear mate, Morde
Vanunu, it seems like an appropriate time to look back and remember his
historic release in April 2004.
The coverage here is from ABC's "Foreign
Correspondent", who did their best to look after me,asI
travelled to Israel to be re-united with Morde, who I hadn't
seen since his
kidnapping by the Mossad in 1886!
Watching this footage again brings back very mixed feelings for me. I
remember almost being lynched outside Ashkelon prison, being searched
and humiliated at the airport, and multiple other painful episodes. But
I also remember the joy of being reunited with Morde.
the trip was an amazing experience for me. I met some amazing people
and saw some extraordinary sites. And yet the hope that Morde
and I both had when I set out on the trip - that we might leave Israel
together - was never going to be realised. Indeed, Morde
continues to be barred from exiting the country to this day! While not
currently in prison, he is yet to find real freedom.
Nb. Because of the length of this documentary, it has been split into

OK fighter, it's nearly time for me to wind up this ezine, but not
invited you to a very special event:
For those who don't know Dr Finkelstein, he is a leading American
political scientist and author, and another courageous dream-breaker
like Morde Vanunu.
The son of Holocaust survivors, Finkelstein has been highly critical of
the way in which the memory of the Holocaust has been used to advance
particular poitical interests, and he has been an outspoken advocate
for Palestinian human rights. For both these reasons his career has
been plagued with controversy.
The documentary will be introduced by Antony Loewenstein, co-founder of
Independant Australian Jewish Voices,
and after the screening we'll be linking up live with Dr Finkelstein in
New York for a question and answer time.
Entry will be by donation, and all proceeds will go towards funding an
Australian boat in the next Free Gaza Flotilla.
The event will be supported by local churches and the local Islamic
community, which means this will be a truly joint
I hope you can make it and I hope you'll help me promote it, which you
can do by printing off and sharing the poster that can be downloaded here or via the graphic above.
So I'll hope to see you on the 24th. If you're too far afield to join
us, do please join us for our weekly online video-chat Bible-study
instead. Bring a Bible and a headset with microphone on Monday at
9.30am, and we can discuss the Finkelstein film again then too. That's
Sydney time of course. You'll find details on what time it is in your
part of the world here.
Until then, may the Lord bless and
strengthen you for the work to which you have been called.
P.S. A big thank you to Sarah Wand and the team
over at Bunnings Ashfield, who donated
some fantastic outdoor furniture to our Youth Centre (a pic of which
will soon be posted to the fatherdave.org gallery).
