Partners in the Good Fight
Father Dave's Partner's Ezine
in the Good Fight
one man dreams, it is just a dream, but when we all dream together, it
is the beginning of a new reality.
Dom Helder Camara
has been almost a month since my last ezine, and I'm feeling exhausted,
though as I look back over the last four weeks, I'm hard pressed to
think of anything in particular that I've accomplished!
I'm reminded of a monologue once given by John Cleese. It went
something like this:
Q: What was that I just saw fly by?
A: That was your life, mate!
Q: Wow! That was quick! Do I get another one?
A: Sorry mate. Only one per person.
Time limits all of us, and we do
need to make the most of the time we have. Yet I'm conscious
the fact that some of the most important things we can do with our time
will not be those yielding obvious short-term results:
Playing games with our children
Spending time in prayer
truth, life is less about jobs that need to be
done than it is about relationships that need to be invested in, and
people that need to be
We all need to make the most of our time, and I loathe wasting time, but
what I need to keep reminding myself is that human worth can't be
measured by 'accomplishments'.
A completed to-do list does not necessarily indicate a life well-lived.
curious. I've taken two significant funerals in the last two
weeks, and I always find it quite remarkable at these events how
little tends to be said by friends and family members regarding the accomplishments
of their lost loved one. What is remembered is always the humanity of
the person lost, and all the little ways this expressed itself - in the
way they joked with us, cared for us, listened to us.
Anyway ... I hope you enjoy the rest of today's ezine and accept it for
what it is - a work of love.
hope the sermons and video strengthen and inspire you, the articles
challenge you, and that the software makes your life a little easier,
so that you can concentrate on the more important things. If I
achieve any of these things through this ezine, it will have been

Also this month I've re-published the
controversial article by Israeli Professor Neve Gordon where he
expresses his support for a program of boycott, divestment and sanctions
against his own country!
I've also published an article by
Malaysian human-rights activist, Chandra Muzaffar, on the growth
of Islamophobia in Europe. The
article focuses on the tragic case of Marwa al-Sherbini - the 31-year
old Egyptian woman who was
stabbed to death by her neighbour while in court in Germany,
where she was seeking
protection from her attacker, who had been harassing her and calling
her a terrorist.!
I've received around 40 votes of support

everybody's favourite Dutch monk, Father Elias, has been uploaded.

Sermons on John 6!
the Flesh of Jesus
Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. Your
ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness and died. This is the bread
that comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die. I
am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this
bread, he will live forever. And the bread I will give for the life of
the world is my flesh." (John
Thus begins one of the most distasteful
dialogues that we ever hear from Jesus, where
he exhorts the crowd to eat
his flesh and drink
his blood!. "How
can this man give us his flesh to eat?" the crowd ask, and
it's a good question. You can hear my thoughts by clicking
the play button below.

Incomprehensibility of Jesus!
When many of his disciples heard
this, they said, "This is a difficult statement. Who can accept it?"
But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about
this, said to them, "Does this offend you? What if you saw the Son of
Man going up to the place where he was before? It is the Spirit who
gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you
are spirit and are life... That's why I told you that no one can come
to me unless it be granted him by the Father." (John
Jesus' offensive dialogue concludes with him losing disciples like an
autumn tree shedding leaves. "This is a difficult statement"
His followers say,
and indeed it is! And Jesus, instead of responding by
trying to simplify his teachings, tells them that they will
never comprehend Him anyway unless God allows them to.
It all sounds rather unfair - incomprehensible even? And
while I can't promise to make sense of it all, you can hear

proud to offer you this segment of our most recent TV appearance.
We were a key focus in the first episode in this three-part documentary
series on men in contemporary Australia.
Our episode dealt with the transition stage between boyhood and
manhood, where we showed how a young man's first fight can function as
an initiation ritual into the adult male world.
This is the first of four such excerpts from this documentary series
that I intend to upload over the next few weeks.
if you're in Australia you can still catch the rest of the series of 'About Men', which is to be
followed by the 'About Women' series, that I expect to be equally
fascinating. And if you'd like to see the complete first
episode that featured us, you can watch it online here.

OK, my friend. That's
plenty for today.
Let me conclude today by offering you my apologies for taking so long
over this ezine. The problem is that we are still very
short-staffed here, and with a new baby in the household, everything
seems to take a little longer than it used to.
I'm quietly hoping that the Good Lord is going to convince one of you
Fighting Fathers from some remote spot in the world to come over and
help us here. I can offer you the same time-honoured package
of low pay, long hours and sub-human living conditions that the rest of
us here enjoy.
Or perhaps you'd feel safer staying where you are and just
helping with the ezine? Either way, all offers of assistance
will be gratefully accepted.
May the Lord bless and strengthen you for the work
to which you have been called.
P.S. If you're free to join us for our weekly
web-chat, we meet every Sunday in the Fighting Fathers Video Web-chat room.
We meet at noon, Greenwich Mean time, which translates as 10pm Sydney
