EGBERIME BRINGS HOME THE AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT BOXING CROWN

by Sam Warrad

Inner West-based Nigerian boxer Solomon Edgerime has thrilled his sparring partners at Dulwich Hill’s Holy Trinity gym by capturing the vacant Australian junior welterweight crown.

Egberime defeated Mick Shaw with a technical knockout in the fifth round at Bronco’s Leagues Club, Queensland, on June 12.

“It was a beautiful experience.  I was in tiptop shape and wanted to bring the title home.” Egberime said.  “Shaw missed me a few times, but I was fast, and your hands can’t hit what your eyes can’t see.”

Egberime said he was ready to face any opponent to defend his title, and eventually wanted a chance at the Asia-Pacific title.

Holy Trinity’s Father Dave Smith said Egberime was an inspiration for a lot of young people in the community.

“There’s all kinds of kids here, kids from refuges, and they really look up to Solomon,” he said. “He puts in a lot of time with kids, and I’m sure Solomon feels this victory is just as much for them as it is for him.”

Fathers Smith, a former competitive boxer, helped work Egberime’s corner during the fight and was impressed with the former Olympian’s kills. “He out-jabbed him and it was a good technical boxing match,” Father Smith said “Solomon wore out his opponent and it was nothing savage”

Egberime has now won Australian titles in two weight divisions, and both his trainer, George Tannous and Father Smith believe he has a bright future. “He’s taking it one step at a time, but yes, I think the future is good for Solomon,” Father Smith said.

Egberime has now set his eyes on the Asia Pacific title. “I want to be an active champion, that’s the most important thing for me,” he said.
