Rev. David B. Smith
Dave started his martial arts training in 1980 - training in Hapkido, a Korean art combining throwing and locking techniques with traditional Korean style kicks and punches. Dave graded to 2nd degree black belt in Hapkido in 1993 and in the same year won the Australian Lightweight Hapkido title.
Dave has also trained, graded and competed in a variety of other traditional styles - most especially in Judo, Aikido and Jiujitsu. In 1991 though he took up kickboxing - taking his first fight in 1994. In August 1996, Dave achieved a personal goal by fighting for the NSW Super-welterweight Kickboxing title, losing in a points decision. In October 1996 he turned professional as a boxer, and scored a draw in his one and only pro fight. Since 1996 he has restricted his pugilistic pursuits primarily to exhibition bouts.
Dave considers himself privileged to have trained under some of the greats of the martial arts world - Thai Champion Sakad Petchindee, World Kickboxing champion Alex Tui, World Judo champion Byung Sik Kim, grappling masters Anthony Lange and John Will, and his boxing trainer, the irrepressible Kon Pappy, whom Dave considers to be the most accomplished martial artists he has ever encountered.
Dave is President of the Australian Federation of Pankration Athlima (founded 1998) and in 1999, travelled to Greece to include Australia in the forming of the International Federation of Pankration Athlima. He was subsequently accorded the equivalent of a 6th degree black belt in the Pankration grading system.
